If you found this page you have either been looking for a solution to Microsoft Vista's slow file copying, or you have used the utility on this page and it has brought you here for an explanation on what settings were modified when you used it.

Rationale:

It astounds me that Microsoft could some how screw Vista up so badly.

For some reason fundamental functionality like file transfers seem to be ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE SLOWER in vista than xp. I am not the only person that has experienced this. If you are reading this, chances are you have experienced it and are trying to find a solution.

Well I hope this helps you!

If you do a search on the web you will find quite a bit of documentation about Vista being slow to copy files and several settings that can be changed to make this problem go away. There are several theories as to why vista is slow and I'm not sure which ones are correct. In any case there are several things that can be adjusted in an attempt to make your file copies go faster. The sluggishness of a fundamental feature like copying files annoyed me soooo much that I created a script to change all the settings i could find published on the web to enable faster file transfers.

You can download the utility by CLICKING HERE.

This script just automates the several settings that I found documented on the web so that you don't have to fiddle around, you can just run the script and sit back and let it do the changes for you. The script functions as follows:

1. when you run the script a dialog box appears as shown below

fix Vista Slow File Copy 1

Please Note: you should be logged in as an administrator for it to work!

2: When you click the 'FIX IT NOW' button a command prompt opens and the following 2 settings are changed as shown below

fix Vista Slow File Copy 2

3: After that another window will open to adjust a Windows Feature called Remote Differential Compression and turn it off as shown below.

fix Vista Slow File Copy 3

4: After that a dialog will open as shown below

fix Vista Slow File Copy 4

On clicking OK the computer will reboot for the settings to take effect.

5: Once rebooted you will be taken to this page which as you have read explains what the utility does. This will only happen once and a favorite will be added to your browsers favorites so you can find this page again if you want.

I do hope that it helps save you some time and ask that if you think it has been useful, then donate a small something to help me pay for my server costs.
